Getting to Know The Siamese Cat

Siamese Cats
Perhaps one cat breed that is distinctly Asian is the Siamese cat. This breed boasts of a long heritage and can be regarded as a natural breed. Although its origin is unknown, historical records in Thailand showed the presence of Siamese cats in a cat book poem between 1350 and 1700. These series of cat poems is called “Tamra Maew”. This pointed cat was introduced to the West when a British Consul-General in Bangkok brought a breeding pair of cats back home as a gift. These firsts of the famous Siamese cats are named Pho and Mia. Since then, Siamese cats are imported from Thailand to the West’s elite until it became common in Europe and in the United States.

Pet owners who decide to get a Siamese cat should observe and pick the right Siamese cat according to his needs. Adult Siamese cats can be found in cat shelters or cat rescue organizations. For people who do not want to deal with training a kitten, an adult Siamese cat is perfect. However, Siamese kittens will allow you the experience of nurturing a cat from day one. Kittens will also have the opportunity to be more acquainted with the surroundings that has other pets such as a dog. Newly acquired adult Siamese cat may find hard to live with dogs or other animals. But then, this is just as true with any other cat.

Siamese cats come in four main colors. These are seal point, chocolate point, blue point, and lilac point. The seal point is the most popular color among Siamese cats. The chocolate point has brown points surrounded by a creamy white color. The lilac and the blue point colors are variations of the seal and chocolate point cats. Siamese cats are generally known for their white color because of their genetic characteristic that makes them albinos.

Siamese Cats
Siamese cats have the most wonderful personality among their feline friends. They are very loyal to their owners which shows in how they treat their owners compared to other people. While Siamese cats can be outgoing, they just don’t play with strangers. Siamese are very expressive and communicative to their owners provided that the owners are able to read cat communication. They make the necessary chirp or meow to get attention or to show affection to their owners. Siamese cats also have a playful nature that just can’t be put down. They are sneaky in finding things and can be taught to play fetch.

Siamese cats are not as independent as some cats. While their color is appealing to humans, it is not an effective camouflage in the wild. At the same time, they are not as active as other cats at night as they cannot see as well as other cats in low light.

The long heritage of Siamese cats allowed them to develop other breeds. The Balinese is a long haired Siamese cat. The Burmese cats found in Burma have fitting similarities with the Siamese and the Himalayan is a nice mix of Persian and Siamese cats.
